Nejdelší tunel na světě se jmenuje Gotthardský úpatní tunel a je dlouhý 57 km (to je jako z Příbrami do Prahy). Oba tubusy slouží k železniční dopravě a maximální rychlost jet v tunelu 250 km/h. Se stavbou se začalo v roce 1996 a k poslednímu průrazu došlo v roce 2010. Dokončení bylo v 1. července 2016. Cena 12 miliard franků. Spolu s bočními a spojovacími tunely je podzemní systém dlouhý 152 kilometrů. První tunel postavený ve Švýcarsku už v roce 1882.
